MARIA MARGARITA
Maria Margarita The Peoples Horse, owned by Oakhurst - was impressive again as she held off the favored Virginia Girl to win the fourth race on Monday February 8th, and her third race of the season. Maria Margarita continues to improve her seasons earnings I really think shes getting more confident and starting to figure this game out, said trainer Ben Root. Juan rode a patient race and she was game down the stretch, because the horse she held off was a good one.Maria Margarita races as the Peoples Horse on behalf of her honorary owners and fans. Fans can become honorary owners of Maria Margarita simply by signing up. To sign up, simply email info@portlandmeadows.com and tell them you want to become an honorary owner of The Peoples Horse, Maria Margarita. Portland Meadows will match Maria Margaritas season earnings at the end of the meeting, and donate that amount to the Oregon National Guard Emergency Relief Fund.

CONGRATULATIONS!
February 10, 2010 Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Day Derby at Portland Meadows.

Congratulations to Howard and Dee Hammer in the Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Day Derby at Portland Meadows! Their horse Seven Torrents went right to the front and never looked back as he scored to win wire to wire! Seven Torrents was able to navigate moderate fractions of 48.49 for the opening half and three quarters in 1:13.21. As the field approached the quarter pole, Seven Torrents began to slowly pull clear of second choice Smoken Sham, owned by Pat and Janet Cosgrove, who stalked and chased for most of the way. Promiscuous Lad owned by Dean and Lois Vogt and Oakhurst Farm was able to come up the rail to rally into the second spot! The final time for the one mile race was 1:39.33. Congrats to all for a good day!

OREGON CHAMPIONSHIP DAY AT THE RACES
December 14, 2009. Oakhurst Enjoys Banner Success at Spirit Mountain Oregon Championship Day!

Trainer Ben Root Wins Three, & Offspring of Oakhurst Based Stallions Win Four With Three Seconds on Seven Race Thoroughbred Program!

Smoken Sham (by Seattle Shamus) kept his perfect record intact, but had to work for it as he scored in the $21,000 Bill Wineberg Stakes presented by Spirit Mountain Casino. Smoken Sham overcame trouble after he was pinched back at the start and came away last. Jockey Joe Crispin quickly got his two year old back on track though and proceeded to move up quickly to get back into the contention as the field reached the far turn. At the quarter pole, Crispin turned his charge loose, and Smoken Sham quickly came calling after a long time front runner (Smart As Jim). Smoken Sham quickly put away that rival and held on to win as the betting favorite. Smoken Sham is now a perfect three for three for owner/breeder Patrick Cosgrove, and trainer Ben Root.

In the co-featured $25,000 Janet Wineberg Stakes, it was Shame on Rosies (by Seattle Shamus) turn to shine, as she drew off down the lane to win by six lengths. The two year old filly was sent off as the 9/5 post time favorite, and took command shortly after the gate was sprung. Marijo Terleski saved plenty in the tank as Shame on Rosie drew off down the stretch in handily fashion for owners Gate 2 Wire Racing and trainer Ben Root.

Corriendo Baquero (by Baquero) scored a 33-1 upset in the Boys Starter Stakes and Tequila Tipsy (by Baquero) made it a double for Baquero and capped a 4-win day for Oakhurst sires by winning the Filly/Mare Starter Stakes. Thoroughbred stakes action kicked off in the third race with the $10,000 Oregon Hers Stakes. The Ben Root trained Nikki S. circled the field under David Lopez for owner Rod Lowe, winning her fifth race overall.

Brave Hearted (by Bagshot) ran a bang-up second in the eventful Oregon Sprint Stakes, Thunder Thorn (by Seattle Shamus) added to his resume by placing second in the Oregon His, and Ajs Equus (by Klinsman) chased Tequila Tipsy home in second in the Filly/Mare Starter Stakes.

Congratulations to all the Champions, and especially those of you who have supported Oakhurst through the years!

MEET THE TEAM - RACING STABLE
TRAINER BEN ROOT TO BE ON "THE WINNING TICKET" SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3RD WITH TRACK ANNOUNCER JASON BEEM! 95.5 THE GAME FM, 11:30 AM

October 1st, 2009

T-minus 90 hours and counting to the first race of 2009 / 2010! The horses are primed, the backside is bustling, and our barn is ready! We come out firing with 5 horses entered for Mon, with 3-4 additional entries expected Tuesday, and as many as 9 Wednesday! The horses received an unusual two days off last weekend, partially due to races of the human-kind going on in the infield. Let me tell you, the barn help and gallop riders paid the price Monday morning! The equines were jacked!

I hope to see you all out opening day when we send 5 to post:

Dancing For Bux - Only my 3rd QH, and just my second first time starter. This little horse has a great foundation of works, but drew the dreaded rail for her initial trip to the gate. Smoken Sham - Son of Seattle Shamus, out of Portland Stakes winner Belle Fourche, this big gray heads a field of 1st time starters in a MDSPWT for OR-Breds. Promiscuous Lad - 1/2 brother to a recent $50,000 southern California claim, this son of Klinsman has been improving daily as of late. Avenue of Sorts - Returns to races after more than a year off. This sweet girl looks decent on the form, but is gonna have to come out running to catch the speed-laden field. Cheeky Joey - Daughter of Baquero drew the 10 hole. QH gets the 1, TB gets the 10 going 5 furlongs. Not good. Looks to build on a short career of 1 win in 3 starts.

Meet the Barn:

Billy Christian, Asst. Trainer Billy has been an avid horseman virtually his whole life. He has held trainer licenses in Oregon and Washington, and brings more energetic youth to the barn, while having numerous years of hands-on experience. Billy's main duties will be to manage daily barn operations; making sure training goes smoothly, daily medications, overseeing feeding, and filling in for me at the draw on Thursdays and rare missed race days. Billy - you are no longer allowed to draw the "peas". (see comment on Cheeky Joey)

Jaime Zubia, Groom Jaime has been a mainstay in our barn, nearly being here as long as I. Jaime's very detailed approach, and taking a keen interest in his charges makes him a great asset.

Kevin Ingram, Groom We are lucky to have Kevin. He brings in years of experience, including several for leading California conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer. Kevin helped with the 1996 Kentucky Oaks winner!

James Young, Groom James is another who holds his own trainers license, maintaining a couple of horses of his own. James work ethic and attitude is incredible, and his interest in all of the horses in the barn is a lot of fun. He is always willing to work, so James is usually also on Hay and Straw delivery!

Harold Kent, Gallop Rider Harold has been the barn gallop rider for a few years. His past jockey experience has been a great asset in gate training, and his excellent horsemanship has been a big help in the paddock and gate with the challenging characters!

Our goals for the year are simple: 1 - Make our owners experiences a positive one, through communication, honesty, hard work, and good help. 1 - Keep everyone healthy - Horses, Grooms, and Riders 2 - Have the best year ever as a barn by Wins and Money, and for as many individual owners as possible.

Be sure to tune in to Portland's first live horse racing show! Saturday morning, 11:30 am, on 95.5 The Game FM!

See you at the races!!!

Ben Root
