INCREASED DEMAND
Noting increased demand for specialized equine reproductive services, Jack Root, D.V.M. offers such veterinary services at Oakhurst. Most major breeds, with the exception of Thoroughbreds, have embraced the new technologies now available.
SERVICES AVAILABLE
The services offered at Oakhurst include artificial insemination using transported chilled and frozen semen, stallion collection and semen shipping, stallion fertility examinations, stallion phantom training, problem mare management and treatment, embryo transfer, and semen freezing and storage. Also, we offer foaling services for all breeds.
COOLED SEMEN
Utilizing cooled semen, it is now commonplace for people to breed to stallions located across the country while keeping their mares close to home. Semen is collected from the stallion, mixed with extender, and put into a special container where it is cooled and preserved. The semen is then sent, by overnight delivery service or by direct air, to the mares destination where she is inseminated.
A.I. PACKAGES
Good conception rates are obtainable using transported cooled semen but mare management and timing is critical. The mare's cycle is carefully monitored by teasing, rectal palpation and ultrasonography. Semen is ordered so that it arrives shortly before the mare is expected to ovulate. If necessary, hormonal treatments may be used to assist in achieving optimal timing of ovulation. By taking advantage of Oakhurst's all inclusive "Transported Semen A.I. Package" mare owners can be assured that their mares have the best possible chance of becoming pregnant.
STALLION COLLECTION CENTER
Oakhurst also serves as a stallion semen collection and shipment center. Many breeds including Morgans, Arabians, Quarter Horses, Paints, and Warmbloods, are represented. Once the stallion is trained to service the phantom, semen collection is routine. The stallion is hauled in when one of his mares needs bred, he is collected, the semen is processed, and the stallion is quickly on his way back home. Oakhurst handles all the details including supplying the Equitainers and making the shipments.
