ROLL OUT LAZY CRAZY HAZY DAYS OF SUMMER
Friday, June 24, 2011

"Roll out those lazy crazy hazy days of summer"! Remember that song by Nat King Cole? I love summer.

Summer has its grip on us with or without the sun we are all missing! Trail rides, picnics, rodeo, fishing, bike rides, and vacations. For me, this summer I have finally learned to use Facebook, Adam is walking and talking and working hard on his memory and motor skills (which is all huge for those of you that have followed his recovery since his motocross accident last year) and we had a beautiful new baby granddaughter with another one on her way! Mixed in with all the good we have had some sadness around us too. But I have always been a person to look at a glass half full and try to find reason, understanding and peace in what we cannot control. So from me to you, have fun this summer, love and forgive, and be careful in all you do to protect yourself and others as best as you can while enjoying a great time of year.

Events coming up :

We are planning a Shockwave Seminar later in the summer and the date is to be announced. The seminar will be a lot of fun with some live demonstrations and testimonials regarding Shockwave Treatment and its benefits. I will send out a newsletter once we have a date and time.

Trilogy this year is Saturday September 10th here at Oakhurst so mark your calendar if you love food, art, wine and music! Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Chehalem Chamber of Commerce at 503-538-2014. Get your picture with 1996 Kentucky Derby Winner Grindstone! Most of all, just come and have a great time.

SHOCK WAVE THERAPY AND ITS APPLICATION
Sunday, May 15, 2011

We use shock wave in our practice and feel it cuts healing time nearly in half. ESWT not only speeds healing but can improve the quality of healing returning patients to form faster with longer term results. A typical treatment protocol would be one to three treatments spaced at one to three week intervals.

Shock Wave Therapy is a noninvasive modality used to stimulate healing particularly in ligament, tendon, or boney structures. Best known for its usefulness in managing inflammation of the suspensory liagments, veterinarians apply shock wave therapy as an adjunct to multiple therapeutic approaches to treat horses with a variety of conditions such as tendon disease, degenerative joint disease of the distal hock, pastern or coffin joints, collateral ligament injury, navicular synrome, neck, sacroiliac, or lumbosacral injury, bone bruising, splint bone inflammation or fractures, bucked shins, or stress fractures, and wound management.

Give us a call to learn more or find further reading about shock wave at www.TheHorse.com/shock-wave-therapy.

EQUINE TRANSPORTATION - REGULATIONS VARY
Friday, April 29, 2011
April 29, 2011

When hauling horses out of state it is important to know what state regulations are required to cross the border. Whether you are hauling yourself or hiring another carrier, it is good to be prepared and informed to have things go smoothly.

Regulations vary between states, carriers, and countries when shipping horses. It is well worth your time to plan ahead and research what is required to ship horses. State to State regulations vary when it comes to brand inspections, import permit numbers, coggins and health certificates. Carriers usually allow limited supplies to go with the horse but should be contacted to verify what you can send ahead of time (ie equipment and/or feed). Your veterinarian is a good resource to help you be prepared well in advance of your shipment date.

In this months Thoroughbred Times Magazine (April 23, 2011 issue) there is an article about Global Shipping we found informative and interesting. Air transportation may be a good choice in some cases and is worth being aware of its availability. There are many air transport companies nowadays and it pays to research and compare as with any other transport carrier.

Air transportation varies from ground transportation for obvious reasons. Though horses do not have the pat-downs and scanners we face, their equipment and handlers undergo scrutiny for safety issues. Grooms cannot carry anything that is considered a weapon ie knives or pitchforks. Nothing sharp to open those hay bales! Veterinary supplies are given special consideration but are inspected and may be held by the pilots depending on the airlines.

Tack, equipment and feed are subject to quarantine regulations. Feed and supplements are sealed to prevent insects etc from being transported. Some liniments that would contain alcohol or spirit make them dangerous goods.

Airlines tend to differ on this, but some do not allow facial hair on the grooms because facial oxygen masks would not be as effective for a person with a beard or mustache. For horses, shoes on or off depend again on the airlines. Most are required to go barefoot but racehorses and other sport horses headed for special events can leave them on if they are taped securely.

One equine air transport company, IRT, routinely provides a complimentary replacement halter. They said that often they would receive horses with halters too big or too tight, or in such poor condition it would break in flight. So this became part of their service primarily for safety, though it has proven to be a nice marketing tool.

We learned a new term "flying groom"! A title given to professional handlers that escort horses on international flights. Many are members of the ATA (Animal Transportation Association) founded in 1976, based in Reston, Virginia. These grooms have strict requirements "including ability to speak and write in English, minimum of 3 years working with horses, letters of recommendation, and experience treating injured and sick horses."

Research, plan, and be prepared. You will be glad you did.

KENTUCKY DERBY TRADITIONAL MINT JULEP
Wednesday, April 20, 2011

The Kentucky Derby is Saturday May 7th and controversy rages over the "minutiae of a proper julep, chipped or shaved ice, crystalline or boiled sugar? But julep purists agree on one thing for sure, that a real mint julep must be served in a frosted silver julep glass! And, of course, made with the finest Kentucky bourbon. Moonlight and magnolias are optional!"

Best Mint Julep Ever?!? Try this recipe we found for your Kentucky Derby Party this year!

4 cups bourbon

2 bunches fresh spearmint

1 cup distilled water

1 cup granulated sugar

Powdered sugar

To prepare mint extract, remove about 40 small mint leaves. Wash and place in a small bowl. Cover with 3 ounces bourbon. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in paper toweling. Thoroughly wring the mint over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times.

To prepare simple syrup, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of distilled water in a small saucepan. Heat to dissolve sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.

To prepare mint julep mixture, pour 3 1/2 cups of bourbon into a large glass bowl or glass pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bourbon.

Now begin adding the mint extract 1 tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste-generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it's right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to "marry" the flavors. To serve the julep, fill each glass (preferably a silver mint julep cup) 1/2 full with shaved ice. Insert a spring of mint and then pack in more ice to about 1-inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to 1-inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep.

When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Serve immediately.

THE BUZZ ON EQUINE VACCINATIONS

THE BUZZ ON EQUINE VACCINATIONS AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Recently we have had numerous questions about whether to vaccinate or not vaccinate. For your horses well being, we believe in vaccinating. Vaccines pass through a rigorous testing and approval process before making it to market. And the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the health risk if your horse gets sick. Core vaccinations include tetanus, eastern/western equine encephalomyelitis, and west nile. They are vaccines that protect horses from diseases that are endemic to a region, pose a significant public health risk, are highly infectious or can cause severe disease. Non-core or risk-based vaccinations include anthrax, botulism, EHV, EVA, Equine Influenza, Potomac Horse Fever, Rotaviral Diarrhea, and Strangles. These are vaccinations that are important depending on risk of exposure. The decision of whether to administer one or more of these vaccines should only be made after consulting with your veterinarian. Two excellent resources to learn more are:

1) The American Association of Equine Practitioners site at http://www.aaep.org/vaccination_guidelines.htm and also

2) This months (April 2011) The Horse featuring a Vaccination Special Issue you shouldnt miss! You can go to www.thehorse.com for more information how to obtain an issue.

Vaccinating broodmares is different than other classes of horses. You are not only protecting the broodmares to minimize the chance of infection but also protecting their foals against disease. The vaccines will stimulate the mares immune system to make infection fighting antibodies that will ultimately pass through her colostrum to help protect the foal after birth referred to as passive transfer of immunity. Since foals are born with virtually no ability to fight off infections this is very important. We like to booster our mares approximately 30 days before their due date for maximum benefit to the foal. Then our foals begin their own vaccination series beginning at 9 months of age. Mares should always have Pneumabort K vaccines in the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th months of pregnancy.

There is no vaccine schedule that is appropriate for all horses or farms. Formulating the most appropriate vaccine schedule is best achieved on an individual basis. Discuss a program with your veterinarian in your area as well as the pros and cons of vaccinating against one or more diseases in your area, or during your show/race/trail season that may expose your horse in ways that normally would not be the case if left at home.

DEACON SPEAKIN' Loud in PM Mile Win!
Tuesday, March 22, 2011

DEACON SPEAKIN', a five-year-old from the first small crop of Oakhurst stallion TIMBER LEGEND (by the legendary STORM CAT), proved much the best in the annual renewal of The $50,000 added Portland Mile on March 22nd. Jockey Juan Gutierrez kept Deacon close throughout most of the race and then took command in the lane and quickly drew away to a 7 3/4 length victory, over an outstanding group of tough rivals -- in my opinion the best group of PM Mile contestants in many years. The running time was an impressive 1:36.7, which I believe to be the fastest mile at Portland Meadows in many years.

See the chart at http://www.equibase.com/static/chart/pdf/PM032311USA9.pdf

Deacon's winner share of $29,150 boosted his lifetime earnings to $123,649. The PM Mile was his first stakes victory, though he previously won in tough Northern California Allowance company. The $50,000 purse makes DEACON SPEAKIN' an official black type winner.

Deacon Speakin' is bred and owned by longtime Oregon horseman Paul Hagemann of Summerset Farm. Deacon was produced from Paul's Hail the Minister, a daughter of Mane Minister.

Steve Fisher is the trainer. Steve previously trained Deacon's dam. Steve is also the trainer of Timber Legend's other 2011 Stakes Winner, Legendary Madam.

We proudly send our heartfelt congratulations to the Hagemann and Fisher families for their great win and a job well done.

From very small crops Timber Legend has repeatedly proven that he can sire quality race horses. Please consider him in your 2011 breeding plans. Call us and we just might make you a very good deal!

BREEDING SEASON OPENS!
Tuesday, February 01, 2011
FEBRUARY 1, 2011

Its here! New foals hitting the ground and mares that have been under lights are in heat and ready to find their match. Grindstone kicks the season off with a couple Thoroughbred mares ready to be covered over the next few days. Other breeds of stallions are coming in for phantom training and flushing in preparation for shipping and receiving. All and all 2011 already has shown more anticipation and enthusiasm within the equine community for a busier breeding season than last year! Reports from other breeders and breeding facilities say they are expecting a busier year as well - so this is great news (along with wishes for a little more blue sky and sunshine to go with it)!

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Tuesday, January 04, 2011
January 4, 2011

2011 is here and we have a lot of ideas brewing so lets get started!

Recently Pfizer held a short course at Oakhurst for our vet assistants, and any local vet assistant and tech interested in attending the session on deworming strategies. Discussions on current trends and recent research on various wormers and importance of knowing your region were covered. We all thoroughly enjoyed our speaker and his presentation and wanted to learn more!

There are many topics I personally find interesting, and I always like to learn more about any new research and recommendations being submitted. I think that in 2011 it would be fun to explore and bring in speakers willing to share this information and invite you to join us! Before I begin to plan our short series however, I wanted to reach out and gather your input as well. What would you like to learn? What has you puzzled and what would you love to be able to ask questions about in person? Here are some of my thoughts and then I want you to add yours!

1) Difference in joint therapy products and how they work. Examples: Adequan IM or IA, Legend, Polyglycan, etc.

2) Non-core Vaccinations and when they are important. Examples: EVA, Strangles, Roto Virus, etc.

3) More for those interested in breeding. Examples: Factors for frozen or cooled semen(best shipping containers, extenders and antibiotics, semen dose and extending) etc.

Now let me hear your ideas flow! Email to: cookie@oakhurstequine.com.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
Saturday, January 01, 2011

Happy Holidays to all and especially to our furry friends all snuggled in their stalls.

This year has certainly proven to be one that we will never forget. It has provided us with previously unimaginable tragedy but also a counting and recounting of our many incredible blessings.

We are blessed to be among those who get to share our lives so intimately with Gods wonderful creatures. During the frustrating times I wonder just how great life might be without horses then I come back to my senses and realize that I would be totally lost! My work is with horses, my recreation is with horses, and my favorite vacations are to go to horse events or to veterinary conferences! The Oakhurst horses at the track have had a good year and we are really getting excited over the yearlings that are now being broke. And 2010 has brought forth a whole pasture of little dreams.

However, the very best part of 2010s horse life has been in the privilege of having GRINDSTONE! To go out and look in his stall and say, Hi there Kentucky Derby Winner still gives me goose bumps almost every day. His reception by thoroughbred breeders from throughout the Northwest is extremely gratifying. We can hardly wait until all the little Grinders start hitting the ground within just a few more weeks. Please send us your baby pictures!

We are blessed with having so many wonderful clients and special friends who care about the comfort and well-being of their equine pals more than of their own. Certainly the economy hasnt been good for us with horses but yet none of you think twice before making the necessary sacrifices to continue providing what is best for your horses. Thank you!

This holiday season is going to be a little difficult for Cookie and I, as it is going to be our first one without all of our children home for Christmas. Our precious son Adam remains hospitalized since his horrible accident on May 15th. He is at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, MA. Though he is no longer in a coma (eyes-closed, non-responsive) Adam has yet to improve much beyond a minimally conscious state (eyes opened, responsive sometimes to some commands, some interaction with those around him). We believe that Adam understands language although he hasnt spoken back much with other than groaning noises. He did say uh-huh once and bye once to his therapists. His tracheotomy tube remains in place but he is not on mechanical ventilation. He still gets all his food via a tube. He is able to make some deliberate movements though is 100% dependent for everything. Fortunately he is in one the best hospitals in the country for dealing with severe brain injury. It is likely that he will progress in his recovery, though we do not know how long it will take or to what level he will eventually recover. At best I would expect that Adam will remain hospitalized for maybe even another year or more. For now we cherish every little accomplishment he makes. Adams wife Amy has been absolutely phenomenal throughout this whole ordeal. She has spent almost all of everyday and many nights with him. None of us could hope for anyone to better care for Adam and because of her continued love and pushing we are confident that Adam is going to bet better and better!

Though Adams injury has turned our lives completely upside down, Cookie and I have been so blessed with an incredible outpouring of support and help from our clients, friends, and family. All of our employees have risen above and beyond in keeping the whole Oakhurst operation running quite smoothly! We are especially thankful to Dr. April Burgess who has been forced to mature quickly as a veterinarian. We are also grateful to our veterinarian friends who have helped with their time and resources.

Dr. April did have a minor setback though. On July 4th a nasty broodmare kicked her in the jaw and sent her to OHSU for emergency surgery. She was out for two full months to recover but every since coming back shes never missed a beat. Talk about blessings!

In early October my own health took a major setback. I had a very acute exacerbation of an autoimmune disease called Myasthenia gravis that has affected me since 2001. Prior to this time I have had only minor or minimal symptoms but this go round has been unreal. I ended up hospitalized on the verge of a respiratory crisis for 5 days and since then my recovery has been slow but sure. With this stupid disease you start out weak and get tired fast. I couldnt do much until just the past couple of weeks though I still likely have several weeks yet to go before Im back to 100%.

One of the blessings that I really enjoyed in 2010 was being an equine veterinarian. I do truly love my work in helping horses and in teaching clients about their horses. I especially love the fact that I enjoy a profession in which there is something new to learn every single day! I love continuing education. In 2010 I attended four major veterinary conferences and earned well over 100 continuing-ed credits (state law requires 15 per year). When I attend these conferences I am incredibly proud to be a member of a profession that is loaded with so many truly great people who work so hard for the benefit of the horse and who share their knowledge and experiences so freely with all of us.

Having come through 2010 as we have we are quite certain that 2011 is going to be a terrific year! And that goes for all of you too! Our economy is going to get better. Horse people will continue to have their lives enriched by their equine companions. The demand for horses will return and the horse breeding business is going to recover! And the Beavers will win more than 5 football games!

Merry Christmas to you and A Great New Year Too!

Jack

OREGON CHAMPIONS DAY
Friday, December 31, 2010
December 12, 2010

Oregon Champions Day Sunday has proven to be a truly delightful, maybe even magical, day of horse racing in Oregon. It has made me once again realize why I so love this horse racing game!

Oregon Champions Day brought out so much more than just our best horses and some really exciting races. It brought together a terrific group of fans, friends, and families to share in a special experience that few events other than a great day at the races could match. My kudos and thanks go out to our OTOBA members and all the other helpers who worked so hard in putting everything together. There are too many names to list but among them Gay, Wendy, and Carol . . . WOW, you did great! Thanks too to Portland Meadows for holding this event on a Sunday when so many of our fans could attend. Hey, and the handle wasnt bad either!

Sometimes the stars all line up just right or whatever . . . and amazing things happen. Cookie and I are incredibly extra proud this evening of how brightly Oakhurst shined today. We are sincerely happy for our friends and clients who did so well today. We are proud of our son Ben and his amazing teams three wins!

Oakhurst sired foals won the first seven thoroughbred races and then Ben had to mess up a complete sweep by winning the last race with Catalina Harbor, a Harbor the Gold mare that he had recently claimed in partnership with his wonderful clients, Dean and Louis Vogt. Bagshots daughter, Betcha Ima Bigshot, was a close second! All the races were great fun and our Oakhurst crew had something special to celebrate for eight consecutive races!

This might be a long highlight reel, but why not. The chances of another Oregon-bred day turning out this special for us are likely remote. So . . .

Race 3 De Cantina (by Baquero), owned by the Wellivers and Carol Duby romped wire to wire to show that she is still as good as she ever was.

Race 4 Shame on Rosie (by Seattle Shamus), owned by Dan Warden (Gate-2-Wire Racing), bred by Oakhurst, trained by Ben, went Gate-2-Wire to win the Hers Stakes, in spite of having her saddle slip up onto her neck and being a run-off down the backside.

Race 5 Nordic Stables Tillmans Image (by Klinsman) came charging at the end to narrowly defeat Taylor Jones (Seattle Shamus).

Race 6 (Cookie said this was a special moment of the day) Kate Winsalot (by Ochoco, out of a Baquero mare), bred, nurtured, owned, and trained by Ry and Jo Harwood over-took the overwhelming two-time EmD Stakes-winning favorite late to win the $20,000 added Janet Wineberg Stakes. Ry has yet to return to Earth from this race, declared to be his biggest win ever. We love you Ry and Jo! Mucho Congrats!

Race 7 I really enjoyed this one. I accidently hit the poor groom standing next to me when I threw my hand down with a resounding YES as Mr. Baquero won at odds of 30 to 1 for trainer Corky Caron and Dennis Van Dorne. Corky had indeed told me that this guy was going to run big!

Race 8 The His Stakes Ricky Ricky (by Seattle Shamus), bred, owned and trained by John and Laurie Ansell came charging down the lane and scored his second consecutive victory, to prove that he is King of the Threes.

Race 9 The Bill Wineberg Oakhursts own Shamundi (by Seattle Shamus) scored as the favorite with other Shamuss finishing 2nd, 4th, and 5th!

Race 10 The Spoiler. Ben won, but this time not for the farm team!

All in all, what a day. I hate to see it go. But what a great reward for all we do. None of this is possible however, without the hard work, support, and efforts of so many great people, friends, and family. Thank you to you all!

OAKHURST HORSES
Saturday, December 25, 2010
October 26, 2010

Oakhurst is starting out the 2010/2011 Portland Meadows year with some pretty strong and competitive youngsters.

On October 12th in a 2 year old Maiden Special Weight Chick Power by Seattle Shamus (Seattle Slew) out of Happy Chick by Harlan was never far back while racing from off the rail. She moved between foes leaving the eighth pole to take command and draw off to win the race by more than 3 lengths! Times were good and her stable mate Fancy Chancy by Seattle Shamus (Seattle Slew) out of Chancy Choice by Knights Choice pressed the pace from the outside to finish a solid second.

The boys arent doing too bad as well! Two year old Shamundi by Seattle Shamus (Seattle Slew) out of Anima Mundi by Namaqualand finished first in his Maiden Special Weight October 20th with Jessica Gilbert aboard. Breaking easy and showing tactical speed while finding good position, gained command with a furlong to run and steadily drew clear. On 10-18 Oakhurst bred horses finished 1, 2, 3 in the same allowance race, with Taylor Jones, Promiscuous Lad, and Es Baqavenue Titan! Taylor Jones is a 3 year old Seattle Shamus (Seattle Slew) out of Designer Forest by Forestry and this years Peoples Horse at Portland Meadows. Promiscious Lad is by Klinsman (Danehill)out of Forty Romances by Forty Niner, and Es Baqavenue Titan is by Baquero (Forty Niner) out of True Avenue by True Confidence (Storm Cat).

Without a doubt we are excited about our current horses in training this year at the track, Oakhurst stallions for 2011 Grindstone (Unbridled), Slews Saga (Seattle Slew), Baquero (Forty Niner), Timber Legend (Storm Cat) and Bagshot (Smokester), the new crop of Grindstone (Unbridled) foals due in 2011, and our current crop of Slews Saga (Seattle Slew) and Baquero (Forty Niner) yearlings being broke at our farm!

Call today for a farm visit or backside tour at the track to meet the team of horses and people that are contributing to the smiles on our faces heading into winter and the new year ahead! 503-554-0227

TIPS FOR PREVENTING COLIC
Friday, December 24, 2010
We typically will start to see more colic cases every Fall and Spring when the weather begins to change than other times of the year. Perhaps in the Fall it is because the days and nights are getting colder and horses will tend to eat more hay and drink less water. And we probably experience the increase in colic in the Spring because again, of diet changes, as our horses have access to all that lovely new lush green pasture with a lower fiber content. We found these tips as guidelines from the American Association of Equine Practitioners to share:

The number one killer of horses is colic. Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored. Many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic and seeking qualified veterinary help can the chance for recovery be maximized.

While horses seem predisposed to colic due to the anatomy and function of their digestive tracts, management can play a key role in prevention. Although not every case is avoidable, the following guidelines from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) can maximize the horses health and reduce the risk of colic:

1. Establish a daily routine include feeding and exercise schedules and stick to it.

2. Feed a high quality diet comprised primarily of roughage.

3. Avoid feeding excessive grain and energy-dense supplements. (At least half the horses energy should be supplied through hay or forage. A better guide is that twice as much energy should be supplied from a roughage source than from concentrates.)

4. Divide daily concentrate rations into two or more smaller feedings rather than one large one to avoid overloading the horses digestive tract. Hay is best fed free-choice.

5. Set up a regular parasite control program with the help of your equine practitioner. Provide exercise and/or turnout on a daily basis. Change the intensity and duration of an exercise regimen gradually.

6. Provide fresh, clean water at all times. (The only exception is when the horse is excessively hot, and then it should be given small sips of luke-warm water until it has recovered.)

7. Avoid feeding your horse on sandy soils.

8. Check hay, bedding, pasture, and environment for potentially toxic substances, such as blister beetles, noxious weeds, and other ingestible foreign matter.

9. Reduce stress. Horses experiencing changes in environment or workloads are at high risk of intestinal dysfunction. Pay special attention to horses when transporting them or changing their surroundings, such as at shows.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic. Age, sex, and breed differences in susceptibility seem to be relatively minor. The type of colic seen appears to relate to geographic or regional differences, probably due to environmental factors such as sandy soil or climatic stress. Importantly, what this tells us is that, with conscientious care and management, we have the potential to reduce and control colic, the number one killer of horses.

For more information about colic prevention and treatment, ask your equine veterinarian for the Colic brochure, provided by the American Association of Equine Practitioners in partnership with Educational Partner Bayer Animal Health.

February 10, 2010 Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Day Derby at Portland Meadows.

Congratulations to Howard and Dee Hammer in the Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Day Derby at Portland Meadows! Their horse Seven Torrents went right to the front and never looked back as he scored to win wire to wire! Seven Torrents was able to navigate moderate fractions of 48.49 for the opening half and three quarters in 1:13.21. As the field approached the quarter pole, Seven Torrents began to slowly pull clear of second choice Smoken Sham, owned by Pat and Janet Cosgrove, who stalked and chased for most of the way. Promiscuous Lad owned by Dean and Lois Vogt and Oakhurst Farm was able to come up the rail to rally into the second spot! The final time for the one mile race was 1:39.33. Congrats to all for a good day!

OREGON CHAMPIONSHIP DAY AT THE RACES
Tuesday, December 14, 2010
December 14, 2009. Oakhurst Enjoys Banner Success at Spirit Mountain Oregon Championship Day!

Trainer Ben Root Wins Three, & Offspring of Oakhurst Based Stallions Win Four With Three Seconds on Seven Race Thoroughbred Program!

Smoken Sham (by Seattle Shamus) kept his perfect record intact, but had to work for it as he scored in the $21,000 Bill Wineberg Stakes presented by Spirit Mountain Casino. Smoken Sham overcame trouble after he was pinched back at the start and came away last. Jockey Joe Crispin quickly got his two year old back on track though and proceeded to move up quickly to get back into the contention as the field reached the far turn. At the quarter pole, Crispin turned his charge loose, and Smoken Sham quickly came calling after a long time front runner (Smart As Jim). Smoken Sham quickly put away that rival and held on to win as the betting favorite. Smoken Sham is now a perfect three for three for owner/breeder Patrick Cosgrove, and trainer Ben Root.

In the co-featured $25,000 Janet Wineberg Stakes, it was Shame on Rosies (by Seattle Shamus) turn to shine, as she drew off down the lane to win by six lengths. The two year old filly was sent off as the 9/5 post time favorite, and took command shortly after the gate was sprung. Marijo Terleski saved plenty in the tank as Shame on Rosie drew off down the stretch in handily fashion for owners Gate 2 Wire Racing and trainer Ben Root.

Corriendo Baquero (by Baquero) scored a 33-1 upset in the Boys Starter Stakes and Tequila Tipsy (by Baquero) made it a double for Baquero and capped a 4-win day for Oakhurst sires by winning the Filly/Mare Starter Stakes. Thoroughbred stakes action kicked off in the third race with the $10,000 Oregon Hers Stakes. The Ben Root trained Nikki S. circled the field under David Lopez for owner Rod Lowe, winning her fifth race overall.

Brave Hearted (by Bagshot) ran a bang-up second in the eventful Oregon Sprint Stakes, Thunder Thorn (by Seattle Shamus) added to his resume by placing second in the Oregon His, and Ajs Equus (by Klinsman) chased Tequila Tipsy home in second in the Filly/Mare Starter Stakes.

Congratulations to all the Champions, and especially those of you who have supported Oakhurst through the years!

MEET THE TEAM - RACING STABLE
Tuesday, October 05, 2010
TRAINER BEN ROOT TO BE ON "THE WINNING TICKET" SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3RD WITH TRACK ANNOUNCER JASON BEEM! 95.5 THE GAME FM, 11:30 AM

October 1st, 2009

T-minus 90 hours and counting to the first race of 2009 / 2010! The horses are primed, the backside is bustling, and our barn is ready! We come out firing with 5 horses entered for Mon, with 3-4 additional entries expected Tuesday, and as many as 9 Wednesday! The horses received an unusual two days off last weekend, partially due to races of the human-kind going on in the infield. Let me tell you, the barn help and gallop riders paid the price Monday morning! The equines were jacked!

I hope to see you all out opening day when we send 5 to post:

Dancing For Bux - Only my 3rd QH, and just my second first time starter. This little horse has a great foundation of works, but drew the dreaded rail for her initial trip to the gate. Smoken Sham - Son of Seattle Shamus, out of Portland Stakes winner Belle Fourche, this big gray heads a field of 1st time starters in a MDSPWT for OR-Breds. Promiscuous Lad - 1/2 brother to a recent $50,000 southern California claim, this son of Klinsman has been improving daily as of late. Avenue of Sorts - Returns to races after more than a year off. This sweet girl looks decent on the form, but is gonna have to come out running to catch the speed-laden field. Cheeky Joey - Daughter of Baquero drew the 10 hole. QH gets the 1, TB gets the 10 going 5 furlongs. Not good. Looks to build on a short career of 1 win in 3 starts.

Meet the Barn:

Billy Christian, Asst. Trainer Billy has been an avid horseman virtually his whole life. He has held trainer licenses in Oregon and Washington, and brings more energetic youth to the barn, while having numerous years of hands-on experience. Billy's main duties will be to manage daily barn operations; making sure training goes smoothly, daily medications, overseeing feeding, and filling in for me at the draw on Thursdays and rare missed race days. Billy - you are no longer allowed to draw the "peas". (see comment on Cheeky Joey)

Jaime Zubia, Groom Jaime has been a mainstay in our barn, nearly being here as long as I. Jaime's very detailed approach, and taking a keen interest in his charges makes him a great asset.

Kevin Ingram, Groom We are lucky to have Kevin. He brings in years of experience, including several for leading California conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer. Kevin helped with the 1996 Kentucky Oaks winner!

James Young, Groom James is another who holds his own trainers license, maintaining a couple of horses of his own. James work ethic and attitude is incredible, and his interest in all of the horses in the barn is a lot of fun. He is always willing to work, so James is usually also on Hay and Straw delivery!

Harold Kent, Gallop Rider Harold has been the barn gallop rider for a few years. His past jockey experience has been a great asset in gate training, and his excellent horsemanship has been a big help in the paddock and gate with the challenging characters!

Our goals for the year are simple: 1 - Make our owners experiences a positive one, through communication, honesty, hard work, and good help. 1 - Keep everyone healthy - Horses, Grooms, and Riders 2 - Have the best year ever as a barn by Wins and Money, and for as many individual owners as possible.

Be sure to tune in to Portland's first live horse racing show! Saturday morning, 11:30 am, on 95.5 The Game FM!

See you at the races!!!

Ben Root

LIVING WITH A KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER
Tuesday, October 06, 2009
Grindstone has been here for 12 days now. I have an incredible feeling everytime I look at him. I say to myself - and anyone nearby - "this horse, right here, won the Kentucky Derby!"

I have seen most all of the Kentucky Derby Winners of my lifetime. Everytime I see any one of them I feel this remarkable aura that is most definitely there. These horses are truly special and unique. When you see Grindstone he looks like just a plain average brown horse. But -- when you touch him, he is different from any horse I have ever been around. Grindstone is not mean but he is pushy and assertive. He absolutely knows that he is special and cool. He demands and expects respect from the people around him.

I was quite pleased with Grindstone's condition when he got off the van. His weight and health were excellent. But, in the first week he was here, Grindstone most definitely lost some weight . . . this was not unexpected because he certainly experienced some major changes in his life. During his daily turnout he spends most of his time running, thus we have shortened his time outside. His attitude and appetite have been excellent. Today I have decided that he is already regaining some of the lbs he has lost. We have gradually added more alfalfa to his diet and he has been started on Purina Senior. (I am opposed to feeding any horse too much grain because of the potential of colic and other problems.)

Grindstone's groom in Kentucky told us that you could not turn him out with a halter on because he would take it off. So far . . . he keeps his halter on. I'd be happy to take his halter off, but getting it back on requires the dodging of some gnashing teeth! So far, so good, but I am pretty sure that his threatening bites are for real!

We are thrilled with the response and support that Grindstone has already received from breeders all over the Northwest. He is going to be a busy stallion next spring!

Grindstone is settling in quite well and he'll be looking forward to having lots of visitors soon.

I am both thrilled and humbled to be part of Grindstone's life. I saw my first Kentucky Derby Winners, Swaps and Chateaugay, when I was only 14 years old. I will always remember the awesome feelings they gave me. And now to have a Kentucky Derby Winner in our own barn . . . is almost indescribable.

I am anxious to show Grindstone to you. I hope to see you at our OPEN HOUSE on October 17th. I get emotional and choked up everytime I go out to our barn. A Winner of the Kentucky Derby now resides there . . . the feeling is best described as perhaps . . . overwhelming!

Sincerely,
Jack

Grindstone will stand for a breeding fee of $2,500 payable with live foal or $2,000 payable September 1st with a live foal guarantee. For more information about Grindstone, click here.

14 DAYS AWAY!
Monday, September 21, 2009
October 5, 2009

14 Days Away!!! Portland Meadows season begins October 5th!

The 2009/2010 season is almost here. Most horses have only 1-2 works to go, and most stalls are now full at Portland Meadows. We had a great tour introducing the People's Horse, Maria Margarita. Our stable welcomed 30 fans into the barn Saturday for an up-close look at the star equine athletes! We went through nearly 40 pounds of carrots and a pound of peppermints as trainer Ben Root talked about most of the horses in the barn. Jockey Joe Crispin stayed around and gave us 20 minutes of insight as to the spectacular thrill of riding a speeding racehorse. Fans also witnessed a 5 furlong (5/8 mile) workout, that saw Maria Margarita finish strong and overtake her workmate near the wire. Stay tuned for the next tour, most likely mid October. Veterinarian Jack Root, Jr. DVM will answer questions related to the health care of the racehorse.

One week left at Emerald, and that means horses are on sale! We have spots in the barn reserved for one more claim, and a couple of economically friendly purchases! Congratulations are in order to Bob and Marilyn Wulff, owners and breeders of Plane Commander (Seattle Shamus), winner of a 2yo race at Emerald yesterday!

SLEW'S SAGA RETURNS TO OAKHURST
Wednesday, September 16, 2009
September 16, 2009

We are pleased to announce that SLEW'S SAGA has returned to Oakhurst for the 2010 breeding season. A son of the legendary SEATTLE SLEW, Slew's Saga was a major stakes winner at age two and won nearly $250,000. With his pedigree, conformation, and race record he could be any kind of sire. His first foals are exceptionally well-conformed and classy. We are quite proud of ours! Check out his stallion page for more information. His 2010 breeding fee is only $1,000.

KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER COMING TO OAKHURST
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
We are elated to report that we have acquired the 1996 Kentucky Derby Winner -- GRINDSTONE -- for stud duty in Oregon. To celebrate his arrival we are having a grand open house on Saturday October 17!

We have had our sights set on the acquisition of a proven stallion from Kentucky for many years. We had hardly envisioned that such a terrific sire as Grindstone would ever be obtainable for Oregon. Grindstone will be the most accomplished race horse and sire to ever stand at stud in the Northwest! In fact we believe that this stallion's appeal is so exciting that his very presence here will truly help reawaken and revitalize our region's breeding and racing industries.

Grindstone's lifetime Average Earnings Index and Average Earnings per Starter are the highest of any stallion currently at stud in the Northwest. Grindstone's percentage of starters and winners from foals stack up quite well. And Grindstone has already sired the "Big Horse" in Belmont and Travers winner BIRDSTONE, who is one of the hottest sires in the world thanks to his sons Kentucky Derby Winner, MINE THAT BIRD and Belmont and Travers Stakes winner, SUMMER BIRD.

Grindstone will stand for a breeding fee of $2,500. For more information about Grindstone, click here.

MEET THE PEOPLE'S NEW HORSE 2009-2010!
Thursday, July 16, 2009
Maria Margarita will have big shoes to fill as she will be the new People's Horse at Portland Meadows for the 2009-10 meet. The three year old filly comes into the Portland Meadows season similarly to how last years Peoples Horse Mystacallie did, a lightly raced maiden with hints of ability. Maria Margarita is a 3 year old bay filly by Scrimshaw out of the mare Marias Romance. She was bred in Kentucky and was born on May 2, 2006.

"She's fairly good sized, but she was slow to mature," said trainer Ben Root who trains the horse for his mother Cookie Root. "I'm really hoping she comes around this year."

Maria Margarita has raced five times in her career, all five at Portland Meadows. She ran a pair of strong second place finishes against maidens in her first two starts and then finished a well beaten sixth against stakes horses in the Oregon Oaks. She followed that up with another second, and a third place finish to end her season. If anything, shes proven that she is consistently competitive and has a big heart.

The People's Horse allows racing fans to experience what it is like to own a Thoroughbred race horse and take part in the experience, all while raising money for charity. Fans can become honorary owners of the horse and are invited to attend morning workouts and training, talk with the trainer, and will receive notices of where and when the horse will be running next. On race days, honorary owners are invited to come to the paddock and meet the jockey, talk about strategy for the race, and afterwards, hopefully go to the Winner's Circle and receive a complimentary win photo.

New this season will be plenty of chances to come out for morning training in the weeks leading up to the racing season. Maria Margarita is expected to come to Portland Meadows on August 5 and there will be backstretch tours and training visitations every couple of weeks as she prepares for her campaign.

As the People's Horse, Maria Margarita will also be running to benefit some of Americas heroes. All earnings accrued by Maria Margarita throughout the 2009-10 season will be matched by Portland Meadows and donated at seasons end to the Oregon National Guard Emergency Relief Fund. Last year, Mystacallie earned $30,574 for the Guard with her incredible seven wins in eleven starts.

The support from Portland Meadows and 95.5 The Game was a truly remarkable experience and something I'll never forget, said Sgt. Richard Wirfs, who oversees the Emergency Relief Fund in Oregon. It came at a critical point in our non profits history. Without it I would have had to turn away several families that otherwise may have had no where else to go.

Portland Meadows teams up with 95.5 The Game Sports Radio to bring fans the Peoples Horse experience and encourages all fans who want to become honorary owners, to simply email info@portlandmeadows.com and say that you want to become an honorary owner of The Peoples Horse, Maria Margarita. There is nothing more exciting than being a Thoroughbred owner and this is a great way to get in on the action, at no cost.

TRAVELIN COW GIRL BY BAQUERO
Thursday, July 09, 2009
TRAVELIN COW GIRL, a four year old filly by BAQUERO, went to the front shortly after the start of Thursday's 1 1/16 first race at Emerald Downs, and never looked back. She opened up by more than three lengths, and held steady to the wire to win by a length for the third win of her career in a respectable 1:44 4/5. Owned by Larry and Veralene Hillis, and trained by Jose Navarro, Travelin Cow Girl paid 7.20 for the win and was ridden by Juan Gutierrez. Congratulations to her connections!

NEWS FROM THE TRACK
Tuesday, July 07, 2009
Portland Meadows will open the first part of October for its 2009/2010 meet. Our son and trainer Ben Root is getting ready. . .

7-8-09 Are you getting that itch?! That's good, because the barn area on the backside of Portland Meadows will soon be alive again! Our own barn area will get a makeover with some new dirt and paint the end of this month, the saddles and bridles repaired, and the horses hauled in - it's time to get ready for some racing! Portland Meadows has added dates to the racing schedule, and is looking forward to another record breaking year! Expected to return to the barn are Jimbos Fire Ant, reigning Champion OR Bred F/M, Nikki S, PM 3yo filly stakes winner, and Delegocho, Champion OR Bred 3yo colt/gelding. New to the stable will be Promiscuous Lad, a half-brother to two-time Hollywood Park winner Forty Dates, Smoken Sham, a 2yo out of PM Stakes winner Belle Fourche, Shame on Rosie, a 2yo filly that is a half sister to PM Stakes winner Ochoco Flame, and many others!

We currently have 11 horses in the barn, with that number rising to 25 by months end and 35 by race season. The Ben Root stable is "fresh" for the first time in many years, as most horses will be coming off of vacations and just starting their careers. There are partnerships being formed (Ben at 503-810-2095 or ben@oakhurstthoroughbreds.com) seeking out a trailer (5) of Hastings, Emerald or California horses for aggressive placing and running, and partnerships for Stakes ($15k) caliber runners. I am proud to say, day rates at the track are NOT increasing this year! So join the fun, and call or email us with your questions. See you at the races! (Ben)

7-9-09 It was very quiet today. Many riders and trainers are off at Prineville for the week of racing there. I think I only counted about 8 gallop riders total at PM this morning. We are planning on working most of the barn tomorrow, like most Friday's, but are tip toeing around a few colds, although it's better now than right before their first race! The horses have gotten used to most of the sprinklers, lawn mowers, and the like in the infield golf course, yet they just don't seem to be too fond of the tractor mowing the 9th tee box every morning! (Ben)

DE CANTINA BY BAQUERO WINS AT EMD
Friday, June 19, 2009
De Cantina, a 3 year-old daughter of Baquero, rallied to beat a compact field of five multiple winners at Emerald Downs on Friday, June 19. The 15,000 NW2X (maiden races not considered) six furlong dash featured five fillies with a pair of wins apiece, all coming from Emerald Downs, except De Cantina's two Portland Meadows victories. Bred by Larry and Gay Welliver, and owned by Larry Welliver and Carol Duby, Oregon-Bred De Cantina finished in 1:11 2/5 and paid $10.20 for the win. The win pushed De Cantina's record to 6-3-1-1 and over $20,000 in earnings, all in 2009! Congratulations to her connections!

TIMBER LEGEND FOAL WINS AT GOLDEN GATE!
Thursday, May 21, 2009
Congratulations to owner/breeder Paul Hagemann for his success with Deacon Speakin' who won a $32,000 maiden race going 1-mile on the turf. The three-year-old gelding laid close to the pace and then took over in the second half of the race steadily increasing his advantage to a 4-length win. This success put Deacon's record to 1 win, 2 seconds, and 1 third in just 5 starts.

Deacon Speakin' is one of only two starters by Timber Legend and the other starter, T.J. Timber won at two and is stakes-placed at three.

Timber Legend is a winning son of Storm Cat and a half brother to two Grade-1 winners. We are breeding some of our own best mares to Timber Legend this year. These include Forty Romances a stake-producing daughter of Forty Niner, Oregon Derby winner Ochoco Salmon, and the very gutsy multiple-winner One Fast Cowgirl!

For those of you who have held off breeding your mares this year we are offering you a deal that you shouldn't refuse . . . breed to Timber Legend for FREE!!! That is no stud fee and no booking fee for the rest of 2009!

BAQUERO - For Race OR Sport
Thursday, April 02, 2009
We have found over the recent years that Baquero not only produces fantastic race horses, but outstanding sport horses prospects as well. Baquero often adds an elegant head, small typey ears, intelligence, and almost always improves on the mares disposition. He crosses well with heavy warmblood type mares by adding a bit of refinement and finer mares by adding substance without appearing bulky. Call or email Jessica today to see Baquero and some of his 2009 foals. (jessica@oakhurstequine.com or 503-554-0227) Stands for $1,000 stud fee. Cooled Semen available for breeds other than Thoroughbreds.

BAQUERO - SIRE OF THE YEAR
Wednesday, April 01, 2009
BAQUERO was named Oregon's sire of the year for the fourth time in the last five years for leading Oregon Breeders Dr. and Mrs. Jack Root. When his first crop hit the ground in 2003 he led both the state freshman and juvenile listings with the earners of $174,595 including the $60,000-plus contribution of two-year-old filly champ Americas Pride at Emerald Downs, and Classa Red Wine in Canada. He was named champion state sire in 2004, with $245,326 earned by his first two crops and included his second champion runner in three-year-old Might E Man. In 2006 the son of champion two-year-old Forty Niner was again voted state champion sire with $241,722 in earnings. In 2007 Baquero appeared at the top of the year-end earnings with $305,845 and also led the juvenile list with $74,509 of which $42,425 was earned by Oregon champion juvenile filly and Os West Oregon Futurity winner Jimbos Fire Ant. In 2008 Baquero's 18 winners were highlighted by the championship performance of now two-time Oregon champion filly Jimbos Fire Ant. Baquero also sired three other stakes performers in 2008: two-time Invitational Handicap-placed Baby Sunshine, twice Sun Downs stakes-placed Schu True Sleeper and Oregon Hers Stakes runner-up Tequila Tipsy. Baquero has 13 stakes winners and an additional 10 stakes-placed runners among his first six crops, which totals 161 foals, giving him 14.4 percent stakes horses. In 2009 both Jimbos Fire Ant and sophomore filly De Cantina who is unbeaten in both her starts, have won Invitational Handicaps. Baquero won two allowance races at Keeneland during his three-year-old campaign. He is one of eight winners - which include three stakes horses, led by stakes winner and Belmont Stakes (G1) placed Royal Assault - produced out of $1.2 million earner Fit for a Queen.

LATEST NEWS IN REPRODUCTION
Friday, December 12, 2008
Horses have the lowest fertility rate among farm animals and typically only two in three breedings result in a live birth. Cattle, sheep and pigs have conception rates 95-98%. A lot of this is due to man-made selection since most farm animals that don't produce are culled early where as the horse is kept around based on other criteria regardless of their reproductive challenges. In Thoroughbreds the registry requires offspring to be conceived live cover. University of Florida, one of the leaders in reproductive research, "has directed much of its research toward a better understanding of the physiological intricacies of fertility in both sexes." In the December 13th issue of Thoroughbred Times, Denise Steffanus talks about a team at the University of Florida that has identified a protein in seminal fluid that protects live sperm from being destroyed in the uterus while en route to fertilization of the egg. Likewise, another protein was found that was linked to the mare's natural inflammatory reaction after breeding that enables the uterus to rid itself of dead and damaged sperm. Better ways to test and understand the importances of these proteins are continually being studied to help detect problems early and learn what to do to enhance conception rates. Famous infertile Thoroughbreds include filly Genuine Risk, only the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby, who only produced two foals (that didn't race). And Stallion Cigar who had won 19 of 33 starts and captured four Eclipse Awards. Cigar had the world's best fertility experts and ended up being pronounced infertile then retired to Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

MYSTACALLIE by KLINSMAN
Monday, November 24, 2008
Mystacallie 'The Peoples Horse' won her fourth race in a row Monday at Portland Meadows for her fans of 95.5 The Game and for charity. Go to oregonlive.com/portland to read the complete story. If you get the Oregonian, she made front page Tuesday, November 25th. Mystacallie is by Klinsman, a grey stallion by Danehill, who will stand at stud for 2009 here at Oakhurst. Danehill was a bay son of Danzig and grandson of Northern Dancer born in the United States. Danehill started 9 times winning 4 of those starts and only finishing unplaced one time. When switched to shorter distances he became a champion sprinter (though Danehill had great strength and stamina too). However it was at stud that Danehill made his greatest impact. Sold to Arrowfield Stud of Scone, New South Wales Australia, and Coolmore Stud in Ireland, he was an immediate star in Australia and went on to become leading sire in Europe on many occasions. Danehill sired multiple Grade I winners in both hemispheres. Danehill died in a paddock accident at Coolmore in 2003. Klinsman - you will want to remember his name!

DR. LITIN -- SON OF WINNING COLORS
Sunday, June 15, 2008
Winning Colors was an American Hall of Fame Champion. One of only three fillies to ever win the Kentucky Derby, she was also special to trainer Wayne Lukas being the first of four horses that would take him to the Derbys winner circle during his career. Her style primarily was to break fast and race to the lead. With winnings of over $1,500,000 she was a champion in every way. Dr. Litin is her only son at stud. With his dams looks and pedigree giving him credentials to be an outstanding sire, we sit and wait at our farm, as his offspring begin to hit the race tracks. Dr. Litin is a lovely individual with wonderful temperament and conformation. CONGRATULATIONS to Larry Hillis and his Dr. Litin son Unknown Doctor for their win last week at Emerald Downs!

A total of six BAQUERO offspring went postward in four races on Tuesday at Portland Meadows and the results yielded Four Winners and One Second place finisher -- to the race's winning Baquero. Quarter Horse CR ISLE BE BAQ took home the honors in the day's featured 440 yard Portland Meadows Championship Stakes for Owner/Breeder Jackie Phillips. In the next race, a one-mile maiden event, CAMANO CRUISER came home a winner by 7-lengths for owner/trainer Mike Jones. LEAN ON PETE took his 11th lifetime win, and third win of the meet, for breeder/owner/trainer Dave Duke in a wide open 1 1/16th-mile $4,000 claiming event. Nordic Stable's CORRIENDO BAQUERO prevailed in the day's final race, for trainer Delmer Webb, after dueling hard on the lead for the entire 6-furlongs with his paternal half-bro and eventual runner-up CHICK MAGNET. Baquero sires the kind of race horses that are genuinely FUN to OWN. They win often, going short and long, they are fast and classy, and they stay sound. If you want to raise a good race horse, BREED to BAQUERO!
